The Importance of Functional Skills Maths
Functional skills Maths is an important course for people who have failed Maths or have dropped schools for several reasons. Employers are looking to recruit people with a minimum of Maths and English skills because those knowledge will allow the people to draw on a set of transferable skills to help them succeed in all areas of their lives. Functional skills enable learners to apply their skills in everyday life and can be contextualised for individual programmes. Each Functional Skill qualification is worth 23 attainment point at level 2 and is equivalent of half a GCSE in SCAAT Points.
Functional skills are benefitting learners because they focus on helping people to acquire skills that are valued by many employers around the World. This qualification is important because for those who have not achieved a good pass at GCSE and have no public certification of the skills they have acquired. This one is a recognition of their Maths Skills. Employers are very much concerned about Maths and English of their recruits because Functional Skills are emerging as qualifications that are valued by employers, learners and the Education and Training Sector.
As a Maths Teacher I have noticed that Functional Skills unlock motivation, give confidence and provide the tools to allow learners to fulfil their aspirations and become confident and skilled members of society. Skills such as Maths and English are paramount to work and life. Success in these subjects is linked to better condition of life and personal achievement. For many learners without good passes including many adults and those that are already in employment such as apprentice, GCSE retakes may not be the most appropriate route for acquiring or demonstrating Maths and English Test.
Functional Skills allow learners to go through different pathways such as Social care, Education, Apprentice and University for short courses.
My Learners have given good response about the course and they have passed their tests with great pride.
